Social music app Triller has announced a new milestone: it reached 50 million monthly active users in June 2020. The company continues to define itself by its TikTok rivalry, pointing out that the 50m figure was “surpassing TikTok’s user count when it was sold to ByteDance for $1 billion in 2017”.
Note, it means the app Musical.ly, which was bought then and then merged with ByteDance’s existing app TikTok.
There’s more news from Triller: it has hired Josh Richards as its new chief strategy officer. If he sounds familiar, that’s because he’s the co-founder of influencers agency TalentX Entertainment, and the first signing to its new label TalentX Records – a partnership with Warner Records.
Now he’s “jumping over to Triller” from TikTok, complete with a quote in the press release saying “After seeing the US and other countries’ governments’ concerns over TikTok – and given my responsibility to protect and lead my followers and other influencers – I followed my instincts as an entrepreneur and made it my mission to find a solution. I am proud to announce that I am formally an investor in Triller and will serve as their chief strategy officer.”
Richards’ latest TikTok video has him dancing in a Triller jumper, so it looks like he’ll be trying to funnel many of his 20.4m TikTok followers towards the app.
