Alongside news, sport is one of the areas where radio currently has an advantage over audio streaming services – certainly for live broadcasts anyway. But Spotify is showing its ambitions to compete with radio with its latest personalised playlist.
‘Daily Sports‘ is launching initially in the US, and will blend “quick sports commentary and personalities alongside familiar personalised music recommendations”. The former comes from sports podcasts, including Spotify’s recent acquisition The Ringer (“With The Ringer, I think we bought the next ESPN,” said Spotify CEO Daniel Ek in February, if you remember.) ‘Daily Sports’ will sit alongside ‘Your Daily Drive’ and ‘Daily Wellness’ in what Spotify is calling its “mixed-media” playlists roster, and while the service has no live sport (yet) it’s a move towards tempting a few more listeners away from talk radio.
