Indian short-video app Moj has 50m users a month after launch

TikTok’s ban in India has created a feeding frenzy among other short-video apps, from Roposo, Zili and Dubsmash to streaming service Gaana’s new HotShots.

One app we hadn’t written about yet was Moj, which was launched in early July by social networking firm ShareChat. It was downloaded more than 1m times in its first week, but judging by figures shared at the All About Music conference in India yesterday, it’s picked up even more since then.

The company said that Moj now has 50 million monthly active users, 35 days after launch, while 250 “top creators and influencers” have been welcomed onto the platform. That’s startling growth, but the TikTok ban in India has left a huge hole for other apps to fill: back in June 2019 TikTok had 120 million monthly active users in India, and that was thought to have grown to more than 200 million before the ban removed it from app stores.

The figures revealed for Moj are impressive, although perhaps it should watch out: the surging popularity of rivals has led to music rightsholders sending them copyright infringement notices in recent weeks.
