For any aspiring filmmaker, the chance to have their work soundtracked by composer Hans Zimmer would be a dream come true. Now it will come true for five people.
Zimmer has teamed up with Sony Music and YouTube for a contest challenging people to create original music videos for five of his compositions. A winner will be chosen for each, and will become its official music video.
The compositions are from some famous films too: Gladiator, Inception, The Dark Knight, The Da Vinci Code and The Lion King. No pressure then.
Videos should be “filmed horizontally and not vertically” (sorry, Gen-Z!) and all rights will be assigned to Sony Music. Will the winners be paid for their work? Nope.
“There is no financial compensation for participation in ‘Enter The World Of Hans Zimmer’. Participation in the project is voluntary,” is how the contest’s website explains it.
This is disappointing: the winning videos will fulfil a commercial purpose, and between them Sony Music, YouTube and Zimmer could surely scrape together a half-decent going rate for such work.
