The European Commission has been training its sights on Amazon for a while now, with an investigation into its impact on the online retail market.

Yesterday, the EC told Amazon that it has reached a preliminary view that “it has breached EU antitrust rules by distorting competition in online retail markets”.

It has also opened a second antitrust investigation into “the possible preferential treatment of Amazon’s own retail offers and those of marketplace sellers that use Amazon’s logistics and delivery services”.

The EC’s announcement goes into detail about its preliminary findings from the first investigation, to which Amazon will be able to respond.

Its first public statement pointed to more than 150k European businesses using its marketplace, while notign that “Amazon represents less than 1% of the global retail market, and there are larger retailers in every country in which we operate”.
