We wrote about Syng in May 2020: it was a startup founded by former Apple design team member Christopher Stringer, which was planning to launch its own smart speaker and subscription service.

The company is still working on those first products, but as launch nears, it has made a significant hire: former Vevo and Magic Leap executive Rio Caraeff. He is joining Syng as its chief commercial officer, focusing on “creating and executing commercialisation strategies for all hardware, user-facing software, and system licensing with a priority on developing audio content with key industry partners”. Caraeff was already advising Syng before joining as CCO.

While Syng has yet to unveil its products publicly, this piece by Protocol from December digs in to the company’s patent application, which showed renders of a spherical speaker, and described some of the audio technology that it will be using.
