Monstercat remains one of the most interesting independent labels in terms of the partnerships it’s striking with the games industry. Now it’s also flexing its acquisition muscles.

Monstercat has bought fellow dance label Silk Music, and will be rebranding it as Monstercat Silk – its third brand alongside Instinct and Uncaged.

According to Monstercat, the deal began as talks about a partnership, but swiftly progressed to a full-on strategic acquisition. The deal will see Monstercat upping its release schedule to six a week across its three labels.

The company says it is currently generating more than 200m audio streams a month from its catalogue, so will be expecting to grow that in 2021.

Among its recent partnerships: a prime role in the latest season of video game Rocket League; a deal to put music in the games of hyper-casual developer Amanotes; and a launch slot on Soundtrack by Twitch.
