Copyright buyouts, where composers and other musicians creating music for film and TV give up their future royalty rights and accept a one-off fee instead, are currently a very sensitive subject in music circles. Now collecting societies body Cisac has teamed up with US organisation Your Music Your Future to expand the latter’s educational campaign around buyouts globally.

They have launched a new site that explains the options of royalties versus buyouts; how buyout clauses are used in contracts; and how legislation covers these agreements. “Artists, composers and authors have to be aware of their rights, understand their options and make informed choices on the way they are paid. Their future livelihoods depend on it,” said Björn Ulvaeus, president of Cisac and Abba co-founder.
