Amazon Music’s app is steadily adding more features beyond basic audio streaming. Having integrated livestreams last year, now the app is getting merchandise features.
As of this week, artists who are taking part will have their merch shown on their profile pages, with Billboard reporting that most of it will be available with Prime shipping for Amazon Prime members.
Some artists are launching exclusive merch lines as part of the launch, including Selena Gomez, Weezer, Gwen Stefani, Metallica, Queen and Lana Del Rey. Billie Eilish, BTS, Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Gucci Mane are among the artists selling (non-exclusive) merch through the new feature.
It sounds like Amazon is hoping to go further than Spotify has (so far) in terms of getting this merch in front of fans. Rather than just living on the artist profiles, the company says it’s exploring in-app notifications when new merch drops, as well as potentially email and push notifications when merch launches from artists that someone has been listening to.
