Fresh from launching in a number of African countries, Spotify is giving its flagship ‘African Heat’ playlist a new marketing push. That includes launching an #africanheatchallenge dance challenge on social media, billboards in New York and Toronto, and embedded video clips from artists including Focalistic, Fuse ODG, Olamide and Moonchild Sanelly.

“For me, African Heat is not just for Africans. It’s for African music lovers,” said the playlist’s curator, Melanie Carmen Triegaardt, in an interview for Spotify’s blog.

In separate news, Spotify has also put its canvas and storylines feature to work in an enhanced playlist for Daft Punk’s 2001 album ‘Discovery’ to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It’s using clips and concept art from its 2003 companion movie ‘Interstella 5555’ as well as quotes from a previously-lost 2001 interview with Daft Punk. Spotify also said that the French duo’s recent announcement that they were splitting up led to nearly 3.8m “new music discoveries” of their tracks by new listeners.
