The growth of Roblox and its use by labels and artists – not to mention Warner Music Group’s investment in it – has sparked interest within the music industry about other games platforms and microverses that might be worth investigating. We’d suggest Rec Room should be one of the first ports of call.

The Seattle-based startup has just raised a $100m funding round valuing the company at $1.25bn, having signed up more than 15 million users. Originally a social hangout for VR headsets, Rec Room has since expanded to other platforms including console and iOS. Crucially, like Roblox it’s about creation as well as consumption: people can create their own virtual rooms, games and objects and share them with the community.

The company told GeekWire that most of its users are teenagers, and that it sees itself as a blend of gaming, social media and user-generated content. “It can be any of those things. Those entities, which probably used to be distinct, we’re kind of seeing them merge together,” said CEO Nick Fajt.
