We knew a non-fungible token sale from The Weeknd was coming, but now we know the details. It’s going to be a collection released this weekend on the Nifty Gateway marketplace, revolved around a new track.
Three visual artworks using clips of the song will be released as a flash sale on Saturday (3 April). That means they will be available in unlimited quantities, but only for a short period of time. However, the centrepiece of the sale WILL be limited: a digital artwork that includes the full version of the new song, which will be auctioned over 24 hours.
Crucially, there’s the promise that the song will not be released elsewhere – e.g. streaming services. “Blockchain is democratising an industry that has historically been kept shut by the gatekeepers,” said The Weeknd, in a quote that seems to have time-travelled from 2017. “I’ve always been looking for ways to innovate for fans and shift this archaic music biz and seeing NFT’s allowing creators to be seen and heard more than ever before on their terms is profoundly exciting.”
