As ‘Fearless’ re-record debuts, fans are hiding the old version

Today sees the release of ‘Fearless (Taylor’s Version)’, the first in Taylor Swift’s planned series of re-recordings of her old albums. This remake of her second album, from 2008, will be sitting side by side with the original version on streaming services, which has sparked her Swifties fanbase into action.

Variety reports on the numerous fan accounts on social media offering advice on how to scrub the original album from their Spotify recommendations by hiding each individual track. We’re about to find out what kind of impact a large fanbase using Spotify’s ‘hide’ button in this way has on Spotify’s wider algorithms, while all the streaming services will be deciding how to play this situation editorially.

At the time of writing, Spotify appears to be using one of the ‘new’ (i.e. unearthed from the vaults) tracks from the album, ‘Mr. Perfectly Fine’, on its new music playlists.
