There has been a vacancy at the top of TikTok since August 2020. That’s when former Disney exec Kevin Mayer resigned three months in to the role as CEO, amid the uncertainty of the Trump administration’s attempts to force parent company ByteDance to either sell TikTok’s US operations or shut them down.
Now the vacancy has been filled, but rather than turn to another big name from the traditional media world, ByteDance has looked internally.
Shouzi Chew will be TikTok’s new CEO, taking the role alongside his existing job as ByteDance chief financial officer.
Meanwhile, Vanessa Pappas, who has been interim boss of TikTok since Mayer’s departure, will be taking the role of chief operating officer. Chew joined ByteDance earlier this year, while Pappas joined TikTok in late 2018 from YouTube.
