Good news for TikTok: US president Joe Biden has revoked the Trump administration’s executive orders that could have banned the app (along with WeChat, Alipay and other apps of Chinese origin) in the US. However, these apps are not out of the woods just yet.
The Trump executive orders have not just been revoked; they have been replaced with a new one that paves the way for a “criteria-based decision framework and rigorous, evidence-based analysis” to be used to decide what to do about apps “designed, developed, manufactured, or supplied by persons that are owned or controlled by, or subject to the jurisdiction of a foreign adversary, including the People’s Republic of China”.
The Biden administration may not be trying to force TikTok to be sold to an American company, but the app remains very much under scrutiny in the US.
