Big fish, little fish, pandora’s box full of licensing arguments… Dance music is big on Twitch, and a report from streaming video firm StreamElements offers some new data on that. It claims that May was Twitch’s biggest month for music in 2021 so far, with more than 25m hours of music channels watched. Note, this is specifically music channels, rather than a measurement of music played in the background of other genres of channel on Twitch.
“Techno culture is crushing the chart thanks to a trifecta of German DJs including Sintica (who wears the crown for hours watched), ThomTree, and Anastasia_Rose_Official,” wrote StreamElements. “There is also Insomniac with their EDM events, RelaxBeats’ chill playlists, and ASOT’s trance show.”
Awkwardly, given the popularity of DJs on the platform, DJ sets are one of the things Twitch specifically tells its creators not to broadcast: “other than music which is owned by you or music which is licensed for you to share on Twitch”.
