Spotify has launched its Singles series of recordings in India to mark World Music Day on June 21. The first release is neither an original track nor a cover version, but a remix: DJ Snake’s reworking of ‘Enjoy Enjaami’ by singer Dhee, rapper Arivu and composer Santhosh Narayanan.

The streaming service’s decision to kick off the program with a Tamil song is another testament to the exponentially increasing popularity of regional Indian language music on the platform. The instantaneously memorable and politically charged ‘Enjoy Enjaami’ was itself the debut offering from Indian musician A.R. Rahman’s new initiative Maajja, which aims to spotlight independent South Asian artists.

The track quickly went viral upon its release in March and has tallied nearly 15m plays on Spotify, on which it has outperformed some of Dhee’s film hits. Less surprising is the choice of DJ Snake to remix the track; EDM is one of the most popular international music genres in India and the territory is one of the French artist’s top streaming markets in the world.
