Who’d have predicted that one of the startup trends of 2021 would be QVC-style live shopping broadcasts – but to mobile phones rather than on TV? The momentum being shown by two of the startups in this space is encouraging investors to pile in to the sector.
One is called Popshop Live, which has just raised a $20m Series A funding round according to TechCrunch, with investors including Scooter Braun-linked TQ Ventures and the Chainsmokers-founded Mantis VC. Meanwhile, Variety reported on a $6m round for rival (and confusingly similarly-named) startup Talkshoplive, which has been working with a number of music artists including Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Dolly Parton, Alicia Keys and Meghan Trainor.
It’s a big moment for the emerging ‘livestream commerce’ sector, which is taking the model pioneered by the likes of QVC and giving it an influencer-suffused revamp. Talkshoplive’s client list shows there is potential here for the music industry.
