Startup Blokur has been analysing the top 100/200 charts on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and YouTube Music in an attempt to rank songwriters by the performance of their songs on these services.

Top of its 2020 chart is Toni Watson (aka Tones and I) thanks to her ‘Dance Monkey’ global smash, which she wrote 100% of – something that Blokur says is a key reason why she topped its rankings. Finneas O’Connell was the top songwriter on Spotify last year according to the company’s methodology, while Badshah headed the list for YouTube – quite the comeback from the controversy around his use of paid ads on the platform in 2019.

The report also highlights some less positive aspects of the streaming songwriting market: only 15% of the top 100 songwriters in Blokur’s list are women. There is a breakdown for each platform in the full report.
