Actually, it’s probably time to stop calling BeatStars just a production marketplace. That’s certainly how it came to prominence, including selling the beat to Lil Nas X that would become ‘Old Town Road’. But BeatStars expanded into distribution in July 2020, signing up more than 4,000 artists in its first week after launching.

Now it’s also moving into music publishing in partnership with Sony Music Publishing. They have teamed up to launch BeatStars Publishing, which will offer producers services including copyright registration, income data and tracking analysis, and global royalty collection and distribution.

There is also the promise that it will work with Sony’s recorded music division to “offer exclusive placement opportunities to its members, helping to place original songs and beats in tracks recorded by Sony Music artists”.

BeatStars said that it will offer its publishing clients 80/20 royalty splits (in their favour, obviously!) with one-year terms.
