We know that TikTok virality can drive streams of music, and we know that influencers on TikTok and other social platforms can have a meaningful effect on artists’ popularity. Now Billboard has teamed up with tech firm Logitech to create a chart that quantifies this.
The ‘Song Breaker Chart’ promises a monthly rundown of “creators who are driving music consumption through content creation”. Billboard is using data from analytics firm Shareablee for the social platforms – including TikTok and YouTube – as well as music streaming and sales data from MRC Data.
The first chart is live now, and is an interesting lineup of not-always-obvious names. Top of those inaugural rankings is Usim E. Mang (aka @usimmango on TikTok) for his videos that helped to send artist Stromae’s 2009 track ‘Alors on Danse’ viral.
Vanessa Clark, Bobby Veitch and Zoi Lerma are among the other creators high up in the chart, but there is also a place for professional musicians: Walker Hayes and Jason Derulo both make the first chart.
