AI music analysis startup Musiio has announced its latest client: BeatStars, the beats and samples marketplace that famously sold Lil Nas X the $30 trap beat he’d use to make ‘Old Town Road’.

BeatStars is using Musiio’s technology to analyse its catalogue and generate audio fingerprints and tags. Musiio says that BeatStars is now its biggest US customer, generating metadata for 20k tracks a day.

Musiio CEO Hazel Savage also flagged up her company’s business model, which assigns ownership of the data to clients.

“It’s my belief that there is so much music being created I don’t need to keep charging people to ‘rent’ their own data,” she said. “I believe there is enough music being made that I will never run out of new tracks to tag, so I consider once that data is created and sent to the customer, in this case BeatStars, it’s theirs. And this is different to how other tag solutions or tech companies who generate data have worked in the past, but I believe in this model, and it works for my customers.”
