Spotify launched its ‘Music + Talk’ format in October 2020 as a way for podcasters to include music tracks in their shows – with each listen counting as a royalty-generating stream for rightsholders. Initially available in a handful of countries, now the model is rolling out to 15 more: Japan, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Colombia.
The model remains the same: podcasters can choose tracks from Spotify’s catalogue to intersperse with their talking segments, with Spotify Premium subscribers hearing them in full, and its free listeners getting 30-second clips.
In separate news, Spotify is launching into what you might call the Wrestlers + Talk sector. Its The Ringer studio has inked a deal with the WWE to develop shows together, as well as using Spotify’s live-audio Greenroom app around the WWE’s big pay-per-view events.
