This has been coming for a while, but Twitter has now officially launched its ‘Super Follows’ feature, which will enable users to charge monthly subscriptions for ‘subscriber-only content’. Bonus tweets, basically, but also the promise of exclusive Q&As.
Musicians are one of the first groups that Twitter hopes will take advantage of the new feature, alongside journalists, comedians, gamers, lifestyle experts and other categories of popular user.
Super Follows have three tiers: $2.99, $4.99 or $9.99 a month, although for now only “a small group within the US who applied” can actually set up these subscriptions. Others will have to join a waiting list, with a requirement that they have more than 10,000 followers; are US-based, older than 18, and have tweeted at least 25 times in the last 30 days.
It’s a careful rollout: for now the feature is iOS-only, and the ability to ‘Super Follow’ accounts is only available in the US and Canada, with a global rollout planned for the coming weeks.
