apple shazam

It’s a quirk of Apple’s music business that the company has announced more public stats for its Shazam music-recognition subsidiary in the last year than it has for its flagship streaming service.

Last November, Shazam announced that it had 200 million monthly active users, then in June this year it revealed that users are tagging more than 1bn tracks a month. The company clearly has the taste for 10-digit milestones: this week it has announced another one.

Shazam has now passed 1bn ‘cumulative recognitions’ from the iOS Control Center. That’s the shortcuts screen accessed by swiping down from the top right of a recent iPhone screen (or up from the bottom on older models), which Shazam has been a part of since last autumn.

That’s a part of Apple’s strategy for the app it acquired in 2018 for $400m, although it’s not just about integrating the app into iOS. Apple has also created a ‘ShazamKit’ tool for app developers to use, with the first integrations due in the coming weeks.
