Syng is the hardware startup founded by former Apple designer Christopher Stringer. It hired music industry veteran Rio Caraeff as its chief commercial officer then launched its Cell Alpha smart speaker in May this year.

Making high-end speakers is an expensive business though, so Syng has now raised a $48.75m funding round from investors including Eclipse Ventures, Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, Harmonix exec Alex Rigopulos and – hello! – Lionel Richie.

According to TechCrunch, Syng plans to use the funding for R&D on its future hardware AND software products. The Cell Alpha is very much at the premium end of the smart speakers market: pitched as “the world’s first triphonic speaker” it costs $1,799.
