There is growing industry chatter about the ambitions of Utopia Music, the Swiss music data startup that has recently been hiring a raft of senior executives, and growing to nearly 150 staff. Now it is making acquisitions too.
Yesterday it snapped up startup Musimap, which has developed technology to analyse and tag music that has been used by UMG, Vevo, WMG and BMG among other clients. You may remember our interview with the company in 2018, or last October’s news that veteran producer Quincy Jones had invested in the startup.
Utopia said that the deal will help its ambition of “building the next-generation infrastructure that will advance creator rights and enable new opportunities for the recordings business”.
As for those executive hires, they have included chief legal officer Paul Stuart (formerly of Soundtrack Your Brand), chief data officer Paul Gathercole (ex Amazon) and COO Roberto Neri (ex Downtown Music).
