Spotify released its Car Thing in-car speaker in a limited run earlier this year in the US. Now it is rolling out a little more widely, although still only in that country. People who’d signed up for the Car Thing waiting list will be invited to buy one for $79.99, although they’ll need a Spotify Premium subscription to use it.

This is a contrast to the launch in April, when its first users only had to pay shipping costs for the device. “Our goal is to bring our entire catalogue of music and podcasts to a wider range of users across an even wider range of vehicles,” is how Spotify hailed the expansion.

Not everybody is convinced just yet, however. The Verge headlined its report on the news ‘You can now sign up to buy Spotify’s Car Thing, but you probably shouldn’t‘ (ouch!) suggesting that many car stereos are capable of similar Spotify connectivity.
