YouTube Music app will be audio-only for free users in Canada

Earlier this month we reported on YouTube’s plans to make background listening a feature that the free users of its YouTube Music app could use, rather than just paying subscribers. Now there’s a bit more clarity about the full changes that YouTube Music is introducing, initially in Canada with a global rollout to follow.

“Alongside this update, some features will become exclusive to YouTube Music Premium listeners, such as on-demand music selection and unlimited skips,” explained YouTube in an update on its community site. “These changes are coming to Canada first, and we’ll keep everyone posted on global expansion plans.”

So, free YouTube music users will be able to listen to music in the background on their mobile devices and play audio from YouTube Music, but on-demand tracks, videos and unlimited skips will be for paying customers only – as well as removing the free tier’s ads.
