AIM Digital Distribution Switch Code

If you’ve ever helped an artist to switch from one distributor to another, you’ll know that the process can be smooth… or very much NOT smooth. Now UK independent music body AIM is trying to nudge the industry towards the former outcome with its new Digital Distribution Switch Code.

It’s a set of six principles that AIM would like distributors to follow: that their clients have control of their digital assets; that they are paid any money due to them; that they will ‘preserve clients’ platform integrity’ (this is mainly about not taking music down until they ask); about working to make sure the switch goes smoothly; helping artists to understand the distributor’s business and how it’s following this code of practice; and working with rivals to encourage everyone to be better at such switches.

Absolute, Believe, CI, Fuga, PIAS and Secretly Distribution are among the companies to have already signed up. All eyes on the major-owned distributors to see if they join them…
