Here’s an interesting intervention in the long-running debate about how liable internet platforms should be for copyrighted content uploaded by their users.
Pex has launched something called ‘Platform Guarantee’, which it describes as an “insurance-like solution… covering up to $50M of copyright-related damages and legal fees under the European Union’s Copyright Directive (EUCD) and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)”. It’s also extending this policy to any companies who use its existing Attribution Engine copyright tool.
“Providing platforms with indemnity from copyright-related legal action through the Platform Guarantee encourages platforms to focus their efforts on growing their business, instead of dedicating resources to liability management,” is how Pex pitched the new service. “No longer will platforms fear copyright disputes that threaten to shutter their business.” We’ll be interested to see who signs up.
