Facebook the company has made its move to separate its brand from Facebook the social network – a move akin to Google’s past decision to rebrand its corporation as Alphabet. So, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus’s parent company is now called… Meta!
A reflection of Mark Zuckerberg’s view that the metaverse is going to be its next big platform. “Meta’s focus will be to bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities and grow businesses,” as the blurb puts it. As part of this, Oculus is also being rebranded: its VR headset like will soon be renamed ‘Meta Quest’.
Zuckerberg’s founder’s letter sets out his vision for the company, which will elicit reactions largely governed by the reader’s existing view of Facebook and its impact on the world.
“In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up,” he wrote. “Think about how many physical things you have today that could just be holograms in the future. Your TV, your perfect work setup with multiple monitors, your board games and more — instead of physical things assembled in factories, they’ll be holograms designed by creators around the world…”
