Facebook reveals its latest plans for creator subscriptions

Facebook is very keen on helping ‘creators’ make money on its platform, and it’s even keener on doing that while blowing a giant raspberry at Apple’s 30% cut of iOS in-app purchases. Witness its latest announcement around creator subscriptions, where influencers on Facebook can charge fans for exclusive content.

“As we build for the metaverse, we’re focused on unlocking opportunities for creators to make money from their work. The 30% fees that Apple takes on transactions make it harder to do that, so we’re updating our Subscriptions product so now creators can earn more,” announced Mark Zuckerberg himself.

That involves a promotional link that creators can promote to their followers on Facebook. If those followers use it to subscribe “creators will keep all the money they earn” minus taxes. Also, Facebook will be letting creators download all the email addresses of their new subscribers, and will pay them a bonus of $5-$20 per new subscriber (up to a limit of $10k) for every new subscriber they sign up by the end of 2021.

It’s going to be a bumper Christmas for ‘smash that subscribe link!’ exhortations, that’s for sure.
