Zara Larsson is one of the most prominent artists to have held an event on Roblox, and she appears to be doing rather well out of it. Larsson herself told BBC News that she has earned more than $1m from selling virtual merchandise on the games platform since May this year.
“My jaw dropped when I heard,” said Larsson. “I didn’t really think much about it. It wasn’t really the motivation for the concert. I just wanted to connect with fans.” Look away now, streaming services founded in Larsson’s homeland of Sweden!
She added that by comparison “streaming services don’t pay the most” and that earning a similar sum from YouTube or Spotify “would take a long, long time and hundreds and millions of streams”. 1.6 million fans attended Larsson’s Roblox concert.
As far as we’re aware, she’s the second artist to gross more than $1m in virtual merch sales on the platform, with Lil Nas X “in healthy seven figures” in verch sales by July this year.
