This weekend saw the biggest esports event in the world’s 2021 edition: the League of Legends World Championship. Two teams from South Korea and China fought it out in Reykjavik to become this year’s champion, with the traditional ‘show open’ screened as a short (but BIG budget) film.
As in previous years, music played a prominent role, with Imagine Dragons performing their new single, with artists PVRIS, Bea Miller, JID and Denzel Curry also featuring. This isn’t Imagine Dragons’ first rodeo with League of Legends publisher Riot Games: the band worked on a track with the company back in 2014, as one of its early music collaborations.
Miller, meanwhile, was one of the human elements in Riot’s virtual group K/DA in 2020. It’s a prominent shop window for all concerned, as Riot was expecting to “shatter” its peak viewership of 46 million people from the 2020 finals.
The event also served as a promo for the company’s new animated TV show ‘Arcane’, which debuted on Netflix (globally) and Tencent Video (in China) this weekend.
