Meta launched its Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset in October 2020, in the days when the company was still Facebook. Just over a year later, the device may now have sold more than 10m units.
That’s not an announcement from Meta, mind: the figure was divulged by one of its technology partners, Qualcomm, during its latest investor day. After it was reported, the company had to quickly clarify that the figure was “an average of third-party market size estimates from industry analysts, and wasn’t meant as an official disclosure of sales numbers”.
Still, it’s fair to surmise that the company that makes a key chipset for the device wouldn’t quote such a figure publicly without being confident it’s right.
In other Meta / VR news, the company has been showing off a new haptic glove designed (in Wired’s words) to “give the wearer sensations that mimic the weight and feel of real objects when they are handled in virtual space”. For now, it’s just a prototype.
