adele 30 play button

Adele’s latest achievement is killing off Spotify’s shuffle button! Well, sort of. There are some misleading headlines out there about a change that Spotify has made to its user interface. Listeners CAN still shuffle albums, it’s just that the default button to play albums is no longer ‘shuffle’. In other words, they have to hit play then hit the separate shuffle button.

Adele certainly played a part in the change though. “This was the only request I had in our ever changing industry!” she tweeted this weekend. “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening.”

Spotify acknowledged this (“Anything for you!“) although its official statement on the change also noted that this is “a new Premium feature that has been long requested by both users and artists to make ‘play’ the default button on all albums”. Note ‘Premium’ there, too: this suggests shuffle is still the default for free listeners.
