The Brit Awards, like all major music industry awards, have sparked lots of debate in recent years about the diversity of nominees and winners, and the structure of the awards themselves.
Now a change has been made to the Brits’ main solo categories: from 2022 they will not be split into male and female awards, but will simply be Artist of the Year and International Artist of the Year (with separate awards for groups).
Additionally, there will be four genre-based categories, for the best alternative / rock act; the best hip-hop / grime / rap act; the best dance act (a category which existed in the Brits for a few years back in the 1990s/2000s); and the best pop / R’n’B act.
The awards will also have a new host, comedian and TV star Mo Gilligan, with preview and red carpet shows hosted by Clara Amfo and Maya Jama. There is also a change of digital music partner: Amazon Music is out, and YouTube Music is in.
