SoundCloud has teamed up with games publisher 2K – its 2K Beats team specifically – for a contest that could see 20 emerging artists dunking their way onto the soundtrack for console basketball game NBA 2K22. The streaming service is inviting artists to submit as many tracks as they like by 15 December, although musicians with a label or publishing deal are not allowed to enter. Oh, and the submitted tracks cannot have been “otherwise published or distributed, apart from on the SoundCloud platform”.
50 finalists will be chosen by January, then that will be narrowed down to the 20 winners who will be added to the game’s soundtrack. Royalties? Nope. Each winner will get a cash prize of $2k (we see what they’ve done there) while granting SoundCloud and 2K “a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, fully paid up, perpetual, irrevocable, fully sublicensable (through multiple tiers) and transferable license”.
