SoundCloud was unfortunate in the launch timing of its ‘The SoundCloud Playback‘ end-of-year review: it went live at exactly the same time as Spotify’s Wrapped. The latter may have hogged the social media buzz, but SoundCloud’s roundup is still well worth perusing: not least because the streaming service continues to be a hotbed of emerging genres and artists.
YoungBoy Never Broke Again took SoundCloud’s prize for the top artist based on having the “most fan engagement on a 2021 release of any artist” on the service. Polo G’s ‘Rapstar’ was the most streamed track, also scooping prizes for the longest run at the top of SoundCloud’s ‘New & Hot’ chart, and the most fan engagement on a track within 24 hours of its release (the ‘Hardest Hit’ award).
Also notable: an award for ‘Fan-Powered Artist’ which went to Sweely. That’s a gong for the “independent artist with the most growth in fan engagement on SoundCloud in 2021, driving major fan-powered royalties payouts”.
In keeping with rivals, SoundCloud is launching personalised playlists to show listeners their favourites of 2021, and published a quirky Playback Awards Show yesterday on YouTube and Instagram.
