Lens Studio

Snap launched its ‘Sounds’ feature for Snapchat in October 2020, as a way for people to create videos using licensed music. Having also opened up its popular AR Lenses feature to creators – who can create their own Lenses to be shared as “AR memes” – Snapchat is now bringing these two features together. Starting today, Lens Creators can now add Snapchat’s licensed music and audio clips to the Lenses they build in Lens Studio. It’s something that will please fans, who create Lenses for their favourite artists, or riff on ones that an artist makes for them.

Snap claims that their users “play with AR an average of more than 6 billion times per day,” and that “creators have made more than 2.5 million Lenses in Lens Studio that have been viewed by Snapchatters now more than 3.5 trillion times” – the kind of vast numbers that suggest Snapchat should not be overlooked as a useful platform for artists with a UCG bent. (We spoke to experts about the usefulness of Snapchat’s UGC tools in our Sandbox Guide to Snapchat last month.)
