Alternative headline: Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag of Rights! Yes, Primary Wave Music isn’t done with acquisitions in 2021 just yet: the company is partnering with the estate of James Brown. It’s a deal that sees Primary Wave acquiring a stake in Brown’s publishing, master recording royalties, plus name and likeness rights. So, more than just a single-focus catalogue buy-up.
“The estate will now have access to Primary Wave’s entire marketing team, digital team, publicity department, branding team, and publishing infrastructure which includes licensing and synch opportunities,” noted Primary Wave.
As usual with these announcements, the price of the deal was not announced, although the New York Times estimated that it was worth $90m. Its piece also offers some context for the deal, following “one of the longest and most contentious estate conflicts in entertainment”.
