As the worlds of radio and streaming continue to compete but also blur the lines between them, it is no surprise to see US satellite radio firm SiriusXM bundling a streaming element into its top-tier subscription. It is quite a big surprise to see that the streaming service being bundled is not the one it owns, Pandora. Instead, SiriusXM’s ‘Platinum VIP‘ customers will get 12 months free of Apple Music as part of their subscriptions, at which point they will start paying $9.99 a month for the latter via direct billing with Apple. What that says about the Pandora Plus and Pandora Premium subscription services, which had 6.5 million subscribers at the end of September, is a topic for debate, although the fact that Pandora is described in SiriusXM’s press releases as “the largest ad-supported audio entertainment streaming service in the US” suggests the priority may be firmly on its free tier now.
