Distributor CD Baby has reached a significant milestone: more than $1bn of lifetime payouts to artists. That’s money paid out to more than one million musicians since the company was founded in 1998, for a catalogue of more than 10m tracks.
The milestone comes after several years of growth in the company’s revenues and payouts, including more than $125m of streaming collections in 2020, up 13.9% year-on-year. CD Baby reached the milestone of $600m in 2018 just before celebrating its 20th anniversary, so it has added another $400m in nearly four years since then.
Since 2019, CD Baby has been part of Downtown Music Holdings following an acquisition. “For us, it’s not just about how much the top earners make, but also about what the payout means to all of the unique artists we work with who are charting their own course, based on their creative vision and their personal versions of success,” said president Joel Andrew.
