Italian labels body FIMI is the latest music industry organisation to publish consumption figures for 2021. It broke the numbers down by format: premium streams grew by 42% last year in Italy, but physical was up by 18% too, buoyed by a 44.2% increase in vinyl sales.
FIMI noted that 479 albums generated more than 10m streams in Italy last year, for 302 artists. The body is also trumpeting the success of Italian artists, and while Eurovision winners Måneskin have clearly been the headline story globally, FIMI says that there is a bigger trend behind this.
The top 20 albums in Italy were all by local artists, as (“for the first time ever”) were the top 10 singles.
“We have witnessed Italian music assert itself within the international arena despite the complicated year, and the ongoing generational artistic transformation in our country,” said CEO Enzo Mazza.
