Instagram has been making noises about launching more ways for its creators to make money for some time. Now tests are underway of creator-level subscriptions within its app. Very limited tests, mind: only 10 people in the US are currently giving the new system a spin: a mixture of influencers, sports stars and dancers according to TechCrunch.
What’s being tested is an eight-tier system of subscriptions ranging from $0.99 a month to (gulp!) $99.99 a month. What will fans get if they pay? Stories saved as highlights, exclusive livestreams, subscriber-only stories, and they’ll also get purple badges to show off their fandom when commenting. “Resharing the content is a violation of its terms and creators are being encouraged to report anyone screenshotting or recording their content,” noted the article.
Instagram is not taking a cut of any subscription revenues until 2023, in keeping with the policy of its parent company Meta.
