Spanish music industry body Promusicae has put out some figures for 2021, revealing that streaming music consumption grew by 23% year-on-year, with more than 62bn music streams. Spain is now a market dominated by streaming: it’s 85% of overall music consumption.
However, this is no longer just a story (as it was a few years ago) of free streaming dislodging piracy. Now paid subscriptions are finally having an impact too: Promusicae said that premium subscriptions accounted for 54% of total streaming consumption in Spain last year.
Meanwhile, like other label bodies around the world, Promusicae was keen to talk about the levels of success being enjoyed by artists. “733 artists had more than 10 million streams and, 25 out of them reached 100 million streams,” it announced.
