YouTube and Google’s parent company Alphabet published its latest financial results yesterday, including figures for the growth of YouTube’s advertising business. YouTube made $8.63bn from ads in the fourth quarter of 2021, up from $6.89bn in Q4 the previous year.
Music Ally has been running the numbers to calculate its performance in 2021 as a whole. YouTube ad revenues grew by just under 46% last year to $28.85bn – around $79m a day if you like that kind of breakdown (and $54.9k every minute if you *really* like that kind of breakdown). This also means that in 2021, YouTube ads accounted for 11.2% of Alphabet’s overall revenues, which were $257.64bn.
Remember, these are just revenues for advertising: they do not include revenue from subscriptions to YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium. The company did not provide an update on its subscriber numbers for those.
