family in music founders

We reported on the launch of Family in Music earlier this year when the Finnish startup revealed plans to create a new ‘online music industry identifier’ called MgNTa. However, the company has some more plans for “a new suite of digital tools to support the modern songwriter”.

What are they? One is a song title checker, scanning to see if a title (or something very similar) has been used already, at a point in the songwriting process when there’s still time to change it.

Another of Family in Music’s tools will monitor radio airplay in the UK and compare it to the tariffs of collecting societies, to show songwriters how much they should be earning (or, if they’re not signed to a PRO, how much they’re missing out on).

Finally, there’s a ‘Cover Song Finder’ tool which ferrets through a database of more than 100m recordings to spot likely cover versions of a given song, generating a report that can then be submitted to a collecting society to improve its data. “For established songs this can often increase claimed revenues by over 30%,” claims Family in Music.
