India is growing in importance as a market for Spotify, according to the company’s VP of markets and subscriber growth Gustav Gyllenhammar. “It’s one of the most important markets we have there. It is a top 10 engagement market, and over the last year, we more than doubled our premium subscriber base here,” he told The Economic Times.
Gyllenhammar added that more than 150k playlists are being created every day in India on Spotify. Alas, he did not put a number on the doubled subscriber base.
A report in October 2021 on Indian news site Mint claimed that Spotify was the biggest (non-YouTube) music streaming service in India by the metric of streams, generating around 3.2bn of them a month at that time. That was ahead of Resso (2.8bn), Wynk Music (2.5bn) and Gaana and JioSaavn (both pegged at “between 1.6bn and 2.1bn” monthly streams).
